The Cardinal Rule: Never Rub
The most common mistake people make when applying fragrance is spraying their wrists and rubbing them together. This is a cardinal sin in perfumery. The friction creates heat, which essentially 'burns off' the delicate top notes (like citrus and light florals) before they have a chance to settle. Instead, spray your wrists and let the liquid dry down naturally.
Target the Pulse Points
Pulse points are areas where your veins sit closest to the skin. These spots emit heat, which acts like a natural diffuser for your fragrance. The most effective pulse points are the inner wrists, the base of the throat, and behind the earlobes. If you are wearing a short-sleeve shirt, the inner elbows are also an excellent, often overlooked spot for application.
Moisturize for Longevity
Fragrance oils need something to bind to. If your skin is dry, it will absorb the oils rapidly, causing the scent to disappear within hours. To maximize longevity, apply an unscented body lotion or a thin layer of petroleum jelly to your pulse points before spraying. The fragrance will bind to the moisturizer rather than sinking into your pores, significantly extending its lifespan.
